Mitchum Qualifies 2nd & 3rd at Watkins Glen

Atterbury and Stout Deliver Best Qualifying Performances of the Season

Watkins Glen, NY (June 2, 2011) – Mitchum Motorsports hit the ground running at Watkins Glen International, qualifying 2nd and 3rd for Saturday’s GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Continental 150 race. Joey Atterbury qualified the 62 car on outside pole while Robert Stout will start one spot back in 3rd.

Both team cars were fast in practice this morning and really stepped up the pace in the short 15 minute qualifier this afternoon. “Joey and Robert put down great laps early in qualifying. I couldn’t be more pleased with their efforts,” said team principal Chris Mitchum. “The entire team upped their game today and the results show it was worth the effort. I am very happy for everyone involved with the team.”

Team Mitchum had a difficult outing at Lime Rock Park last weekend where fueling issues cost both cars good finishes. The team suffered an additional setback as they transported the cars and equipment across New York State from Connecticut when the secondary trailer carrying spare parts and additional equipment was involved in a major accident, rolling over on the highway. Three crew members were in the tow vehicle at the time of the accident but all walked away with only minor injuries.

“We got lucky the other night. Things could have been much worse – no one was seriously hurt and most of our gear survived as well,” continued Mitchum. “We recovered from the accident and everyone on the team really pulled it together today. I think we showed the rest of the paddock what Mitchum Motorsports is made of..”

“We like our chances tomorrow. Starting up front is where you want be, and we’re confident we have a great race pace. Jeff (Bucknum) and Lawson (Aschenbach) have been equally as fast in each session, on new tires and old tires, so we are looking forward to the start of the race Friday,” added Mitchum.
