Mitchum Finishes 4th and 12th at Mazda Raceway Laguna SecaJoey Atterbury and Lawson Aschenbach drove the #62 Mitchum Motorsports GS.R Camaro to a 4th place finish in Saturday’s GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race. This was the duos best finish of the year and gave the two car team back-to-back 4th place finishes following the #6 sister car’s finish at Road America two weeks ago.
After qualifying the #62 car on the inside of the second row in third, Atterbury drove a flawless stint before turning over the car over to Aschenbach who methodically drove through the field. Unfortunately he ran out of time to get the final podium spot and finished the race in 4th.
The #6 car driven by Robert Stout and Jeff Bucknum proved to be a formidable contender at the front of the field as well. After starting 5th Stout was able to race his way into the lead before turning the car over to Bucknum, who worked his way back up to 5th before getting caught out with a restart infraction forcing a stop and go penalty. Jeff picked his way through traffic again and ultimately made it back to 12th position.
“We qualified great on Friday which allowed us to go out with two different race strategies in order to maximize our chances for a strong finish. Both strategies worked perfectly, giving each car an opportunity to run up front,” said team principal Chris Mitchum. “Overall I am pleased with the results as a top five in this series is hard to come by, but I am disappointed for the crew. They performed flawlessly – in practice making changes to the cars on the fly – and during the race, we had our best pits stops of the season with no one missing a beat. The guys did everything we asked of them to put the cars in positions to finish strong.”
