Mitchum Attacks 2nd Leg of New England Trip

Watkins Glen, NY (June 1, 2011) – Mitchum Motorsports brings their two Chevrolet Camaros to historic Watkins Glen for this weekend’s GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Continental Tire 150 straight from Lime Rock Park where the 62 car finished 9th and the 6 car finished 14th. While another top-ten finish looks good on paper, the team is far from satisfied with the results however.

After qualifying 11th (6 car) and 13th (62 car) the team was pleased with both cars race pace and had both cars moving through the field, picking up positions early in the race, with the 6 car leading before stopping for fuel and a driver change. Unfortunately both cars struggled in the pits with refueling issues caused by a damaged hose. The 6 car lost a lap and the 62 car didn’t get topped off with Sunoco fuel, forcing a late race splash and go stop which cost the team several positions on track.

“All four of our drivers performed well at Lime Rock. Robert (Stout) put a great lap down in qualifying and drove the wheels off the car during his opening stint in the race,” said team principal Chris Mitchum. “Unfortunately we let both cars down with the refueling issues. I have to hand it to the drivers though. Jeff (Bucknum), Joey (Atterbury) and Lawson (Aschenbach) stayed with it and kept pushing forward. The 62 really earned its top ten finish, but unfortunately loosing that lap put the 6 car out of contention.”

The team was hard at work Memorial Day weekend in a local shop in Connecticut, preparing the cars for the Watkins Glen race, and sorting through the refueling issues. “We spent a good amount of time making changes to some equipment so we won’t ever experience the same problems. The cars were in good shape after the race so fortunately there weren’t any major repairs to be made while we were away from our home shop,” added Mitchum. “We are ready for the Glen and expect to show speed and much better overall team performance. The 62 car ran strong at the Glen last year until our rear bumper was torn off, forcing a pit stop to repair our brake lights. I expect to see both cars up front this weekend.”
