Bucknum steps out of the #6 Camaro for 1 race to help raise Sponsorship

Mitchum Motorsports and GoPro have announced a partnership for the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series. The first outing for the #6 in GoPro livery will be the season finale at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on September 17th.The team has also signed NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Justin Marks to co-drive with Lawson Aschenbach in the #6 GS.R Camaro entry. Justin Marks is a veteran racer, with five wins in the Continental Tire series, eight wins in the Rolex series including a Rolex 24 victory in 2009, 34 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts, and eight NASCAR Nationwide Series starts. He brings years of racing experience and a fresh perspective to the team. Team Principal Chris Mitchum opined:”We are excited to have an opportunity to pair Justin and Lawson in the Chevy Camaro. Justin’s experience racing stock cars combined with his winning road racing background in GRAND-AM GT and GS class cars will be a perfect fit. He and Lawson have proven they can get the job done, and we think this will add just the spark the team needs to finish on the podium.”

“I’m looking forward to Mid-Ohio with Lawson and the Mitchum Motorsports team. I have a lot of fond memories of my time a few years back in the Continental Tire Series. I’m also excited to bring GoPro into GRAND-AM. They’ve been a huge supporter of mine this year in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and it’s going to be great bringing them into a new racing environment. I know the GoPro Camaro is going to be fast,” said Marks. “Lawson and I are great friends and we’ve been trying to find a way to race together for a few years now, so hopefully this will be the first race in a successful driving partnership.”

The two car Camaro team is taking the opportunity to shuffle the driver lineups of both cars; Joey Atterbury and Robert Stout will now be paired up in the #62.

This will be the first race with Atterbury and Stout sharing the same car, but they are far from strangers. They have tested and raced next to each other all year, shared setup information and on-board videos so they are very comfortable with each other’s driving styles. “Robert has stepped up his game since coming on board with us at the beginning of the season. He is a true pro, and has proven that he is a solid qualifier that’s ready for the next challenge,” continued Mitchum. “Joey has the experience and skill to step into the closer role, as he did for most of last season. They have been neck and neck in qualifying all year, both showing tremendous speed. Now, we are really excited to see what these two guys can do together in the Lucas Oil / Makita Chevrolet Camaro.”

Jeff Bucknum, the team’s other GM factory driver, has tremendous talent and speed, and gave the team its first top four finish in GRAND-AM competition. He has been instrumental in developing new talent and deserves much of the credit for Stout getting quickly acclimated to the Camaro and GRAND-AM racing. “Jeff is on board with the team’s decision to begin focusing on next year early since the championship is out of our grasp for 2011. He will step out of his driving role for one race to help the team finalize sponsorships and driver lineups for next season but will remain an active participant with the team at Mid-Ohio, continuing to coach and mentor our young drivers and then picking up his driving role for the team again in off season testing and the 2012 championship,” added Mitchum. “GoPro coming on board is just fantastic. They are involved in virtually every form of motorsport, and everyone has seen the awesome footage their camera’s capture. It’s exciting for them to put their trust in Mitchum Motorsports, it is a huge honor. We intend to make them proud and live up to their credo of “Be a Hero” by putting the GoPro Chevrolet Camaro up front and in a position to win,” added Mitchum.

“We have used GoPro cameras for quite a while now, in our GRAND-AM cars and our club program, so it is great fit for us. We’ll continue to use them as they are great tools to train drivers and fun for the fans.
